Community Organizers: You have my respect

I am pissed.  Beyond pissed.  I am climbing out of my own skin.  The Republicans have gone TOO FAR.   I make no bones about it.  I am a Democrat.  However, I understand the way that politics work.   The name of the game is attack the other side.

However, what does it accomplish to attack Barrack Obama by attacking community organizers?  Do they realize that by mocking the fact that he has community organizer experience they put down those courageous, compassionate people that build communities everywhere?  That they are putting down those that help build America?  And by Governor Palin saying that small town mayors (compared to community organizers) have “actual responsibilities”  it eats at the very core of what we need in this country?  We need those organizers  who build our communities. We need people that help get others back on their feet.  We need those who fight for better education for our kids in poor communities. We need those that fight for those that have no voice.  We need organizers who bring people together, to build self-sustaining communities.  Those that work as community organizers do take their efforts as an “actual responsibility”.  They take it seriously.  It is their life work.

Back the fuck off.

You want to say that you don’t think that his time as a community organizer qualifies him to be president?  Fine.  Fair game. Mocking the fact that he acted as a community organizer, saying that it detracts from his resume, stating that it isn’t an actual responsibility, and twisting it as a negative divides the country. It  It disenfranchises communities all over the U.S.  It diminishes the work of community heroes, those that make a difference, those I would be proud for my son and daughter to emulate.  I don’t want people who find that type of work beneath their praise, nay, to actually criticize it, run my country.

I often have said, “I may not agree with you, but I can respect you as a person.”  These Republicans have just lost that respect.

I know that McCain is getting criticized as well. I know and respect the fact that he is a POW. Someone pointed out to me that McCain is being criticized for having seven houses and that is in just as poor taste. That may be in poor taste, but I have to disagree with the very analogy. People (again…not talking about Obama….. but the very people became casualties at the attempt to attack Obama) that work in the community define themselves by their work. I am sure others that own seven houses don’t define themselves by their houses. There is other things that they are proud of which define them. I don’t see the analogy as attacking service to attacking what we own as a credible one……

Great post and I SO am with you! It’s one thing to disagree on policies (everyone’s right) but another to attack and belittle someone as a person. It’s low-brow and classless and not at ALL what political debate is supposed to be about.

Community organizing and grass roots movements is what our ENTIRE political process is based on. Palin’s speech in particular was a great disappointment to me for all the reasons you mention here.

“Back the fuck off” is right!

It’s nice to find your blog! Thanks so much for visiting mine!
