It is our family tradition to put up the Christmas tree the weekend after Thanksgiving. Last night, we rearranged all of the furniture in our living room and dining room to make space for the tree. It is the first time that we will be having a tree in our VERY OWN HOME and it feels good. It also feels like, for the first time, I should maybe decorate besides just the tree…. but I digress.
Setting up the tree was fun. Wise Guy is old enough this year to participate in the decorating. He doesn’t quite understand the significance yet, but he can decorate the hell out of the tree from three feet down. He kept saying “It’s a tree. It’s a tree. In the house?”
Sweetie, in her quintessential first child way, demonstrated to Wise Guy, that , no, those were not bouncy balls, they were ornaments, and you put them on the tree “like this.”
Of course Sweetie was still wearing her favorite Halloween shirt as decorated the tree. She had fun finding all of her “old ornaments” and reminiscing about them.
Our tree is a hodgepodge of ornaments, some nice, most fun. Some people create themes for a tree and try to make it beautiful. We try to make it fun, getting oraments for the tree that make us smile and remind us what Christmas is all about: fun, wonder, and giving.
Soon I will be writing about some of our other holiday traditions. I recently found out that some of these traditions have strange origins involving characters such as the “sausage snatcher….” so stay tuned for these revelations!

I always have the best intentions to decorate “more than the tree.” Every year I say “Let’s wait until the after christmas sales and buy a lot of decorations,” unfortunately I always forget how completely broke christmas makes you.

That sounds like fun! I’m sure the tree looks great, especially the lower half! We haven’t decided whether to put one up this year, both kids are still pretty destructive so it would be tough to keep safe..

Actually after less than a day, the bottom few feet are now starting to look sparse as I have to keep shifting ornaments that Wise Guy likes to play with up to higher ground.

I keep trying to get motivated to put our tree up
We always travel to Maui for Christmas, but I try to put our tree up before we leave. If I don’t do it early it just isn’t even worth it. I MUST do it today!
