Sweetie – Age Four – Future Leader?

Political talk is flooding the air waves this election, so I wasn’t too surprised was Sweetie picked up the name Barack Obama, and started talking about him It is an odd name that is heard everyday, several times a day on the news and the radio. She also talks about Hillary Clinton and John McCain running for president, but Barack Obama is always said in an exalted voice. Guess she has picked her candidate, even if it is because he has an interesting name. It is strange, since my husband and I, while can be pretty political, don’t really talk about politics around the kids (I say that as if it is dirty…….). There just isn’t enough uninterrupted moments to have a conversation like that.

It is funny what kids pick up though. They pay attention when you least expect them too. The other day, we were driving in the car, and, once again, she heard “Barack Obama” on the radio. So she says, in her normal excited voice, “Barack Obama!!!! Mom, did you know that if Barack Obama does not win at the party, he might become vice president, and if he does, Hillarly (Spelled how she says it) Clinton might become vice president. Hey mom. When is that party?” I nearly peed myself. Although, I guess the convention is kind of like a party, but she is referring to the Democratic party as the “Party”. It is funny how kids think……

A few days later, she says that it would be interesting to see a woman and an African American run for president against John McCain. She thinks they could win, because they have hair.

Today, again the topic came up when she saw a clip on the news. So I asked her, “what do you think would make a good president.” She paused for a minute, said, “I don’t know. Maybe someone who can do everything a mom can do……” That’s my girl! Four years old, and already knows that the qualities that moms possess are qualities that make great leaders. There is hope for the future!

Ahh. She is like Alex P. Keaton but as a democrat. What more could a father ask for? If she gets that excited about such things, I’ll take her to that party. But we will probably have to stop at a good number of 7-11s along the way.
